Faculty Advisor:

Dr. Edwin Lacy

“Being associated with SAI for over 20 years has been a very rewarding experience for me.  I have appreciated the opportunity to serve as advisor for the Beta Epsilon Chapter.  This has been a very easy job because the chapter has the advantage of very good student leaders.  The work of the fraternity seems to perpetuate itself without any help from me or anyone else.  The chapter seems to be vital and growing, and I expect more great things from the members in the future.”  ~Edwin Lacy

Edwin Lacy currently holds the position of Eades Distinguished Professor of Music at the University of Evansville, where he teaches bassoon, saxophone, jazz, and woodwind techniques.  At UE he is the founder and director of the jazz program and he has served as the Chairman of the Department of music on three separate occasions for a total of seven and a half years.  A native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, he holds the Bachelor of Music education degree from Murray State University, a Master of Music degree in Bassoon and a Doctor of Music in Woodwinds from Indiana University.

Dr. Lacy serves as principle bassoonist and saxophone soloist of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he has been a member for 38 seasons.  He was also principal bassoonist of the Owensboro, Kentucky Symphony Orchestra for over twenty seasons and has served as principal bassoonist of the Indianapolis Festival Music Society Orchestra and the Harlaxton Quintet.  He has performed solo recitals at the University of Colorado, the University of Georgia, Western Michigan University and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.  His chamber music performances have included appearances at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Interlochen Arts Academy and on the Wisconsin Public Radio Network.

He has been a member of the International Double Reed Society since the inception of the organization.  Dr. Lacy was Secretary of the IDRS for four terms and has served as chairman and host of two of the Society’s annual conventions.  He has been featured six times as a performer at the IDRS conferences, including an appearance with the Harlaxton Quintet which was the opening event of the 1980 conference at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

Dr. Lacy is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators, Pi Kappa Lambda music honorary society and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.  He is a recipient of Phi Mu Alpha’s Orpheus Award, served as the faculty advisor for Phi Mu Alpha for 30 years, and is an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota.

His teaching experience includes six years in the public school of Indiana and Illinois and one year at the University of Charleston, West Virginia, in addition to his 40 years at the University of Evansville.  His visiting professorships include the Visiting Professor of Music at the University of Louisville, KY (1977) and at Indiana University (1986).  From 1989 to 1990 he was instructor of bassoon and saxophone at the New England Music Camp in Oakland, Maine.
